Im going on my first placement from uni at a vascular surgery ward
next week, looking forward to it, a bit apprehensive at the same time.

I have read through vascularsurgeon.co.uk, a few journal articles about
placements.

Any advice? What should I know? What should I ask?

Your assessment of practice documents should give you some idea of the areas
of knowledge, skills and values that you will be assessed on during this
placement. Also, your module assignment(s) may link theory to practice in
some way, and thereby generate some questions. As it is your first placement
I imagine that the emphasis will be on learning the practical aspects of
patient care, and communication and interpersonal skills. As for questions,
you could ask if there is a student placement guide or workbook. You could
also ask if you can attend a vascular outpatient clinic, observe some
vascular investigations or surgery, spend time with a vascular specialist
nurse or other member of the vascular multi-disciplinary team, but probably
not on the first day. Finally, any tickets left for the Christmas party? I
hope it goes well, do let us know.

Worry not; your mentor and your link lecturer will take care of you. After
that its all plain sailing. Which hospital are you going to?

As well as this excellent advice you might want to look at the Smile files
for UWE students going onto placements and their mentors at

Went quite well I feel. Last bit this year, back in the new year full
time until March. Have done much more than I was expecting, I thought I
sould be concentrating on the essentials, but have only helped wash 1
person, and fed another getting involved with people going to theatre,
drugs and wounds which I was not expecting. When I have done things
similar to functions I performed in my HCA work I felt I thought more
about what I was doing and why.

A nice bunch of staff and patients on the ward, I feel I will get on
well there. I just need to meet my mentor now - she has not been there
when I have, so have not gone through any paperwork with her yet.
