Hi all ... I have been asked to come up with a protocol for Confirming death
( as opposed to Certifying - this is a GPs job !)

I work in care home with nursing .. the local PCT opted out of providing
out of hours cover. This led to a situation where paramedics attend out of
hours. They feel the role of attending an expected death out of hours should
be the GPs as the will not attend but ask us to phone the GPs on opening
the following morning.

So I know a nurse can confirm death IF there is an explicit protocol in
place ... the GPs will co -operate with a protocol and we will be able
to then send the deceaced to the funeral directors/chapel of rest.

So can anyone point me in the direction of any info ?
I know we will check for the vital signs etc. and then again a little time
after, but if anyone out here is using a nursing protocol for confirmation
of death ..

Regards Graham
