British Friendship Hospital at Ky Anh

QUESTION: About 20 years ago I made a contribution towards building a
British hospital in Vietnam. What became of this project?
- There appeared in the Morning Star a centre spread of postcards from
Vietnam. This included a half-page photograph of the British Friendship
Hospital or, more specifically,
the new wing which was opened in 1990 with substantial aid from St
Helens, Lancashire (sic). The hospital is situated at Ky Anh in the Ha
Tinh Province and was built with money collected throughout Britain.
The article accompanying the photographs was written by Dr Madeleine
Sharp, the present honorary secretary of Medical and Scientific Aid to
Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, from whom much more information about the
hospital can be obtained. The address is 244, Ellerdine Road, Hounslow,
TW3 2PY. In 1992 alone, thousands of pounds of aid and equipment was
contributed by Britain and pounds 12,000 has been set aside for the
artificial limb project - altogether a total of pounds 9O,000. - John

April 16, 1989 (obituary for Dr. Joan McMichael-Askins):
As the war drew to its end and hospitals were destroyed and needed to
be replaced, Joan launched a new committee to build a British hospital
for Vietnam. Although the Pounds 2 million needed to do as she wanted
to did not come in, funds collected were used for the rebuilding and
refitting of Qy Anh Hospital and Joan made further visits to Vietnam to
monitor its progress. She seemed marvellously tireless and efficient in
her
efforts.
