Ive seen that name a bit in ukrm. Maybe you might help me.

Fruit of my loins is learning to be a nurse in Leeds and (it
seems) he works long hours.

Hes always skint.

Me and her thought he should be able to get work easily enough in
a hospital.
We have no idea what he could do there officially, but he says
its not easy to get on the bank(?).

Have you any suggestions that might help?

He will not thank me for enquiring! especially if he finds work
as a result.

He does however have a terrific attitude to work when he is involved.

Student nursing must be very different in Leeds than in Bedford then :-)
Some of the students here dont go to their first class til nigh on 10am

heh, studentship for ya.

Ah, yes and no. It really depends what he wants to do and what the
particular hospitals attitude is to students that should really be devoting
all their time to learning, but working instead.

The bank is usually the same as a nursing agency, however, its run
internally. Indeed there was/is a nationwide plan to get rid of these and
they are possibly now retitled as NHS Professionals, however, as is common
in the NHS every trust / health authority seems to have their own
interpretation!

Anyway, I would guess that hes been trying to get on the nurse bank, he
wont obviously be on there as a nurse but as a HCA (Health Care Assistant),
used to be called nursing auxillary, or nursing assistant if i remember
right. Dont make as much as a registered nurse, however, it would nicely
supplement his bursary and give him some experience of what its really like
on the wards.

All the above. I would have thought he should just be able to ask for an
application form for a HCA, id be surprised if they turn him away.
remember though, bank work can be in frequent, crap hours, etc so its not
like applying for a regular hours job.

heh, he will in the end, even if he never verbally says it.

A lot of nursing students work as agency/bank health care assistants; but
by the nature of students, they are all available at the same time (and not
others!) so their pattern rarely matches service needs.

It would be worth him investigating nursing homes and the like; if he gets a
good reputation with an agency, hell soon get the pick of the jobs!

(Im not speaking specifically for leeds, but Id be surprised if it was
much different to most UK cities in this respect).

A

PS ignore all the rubbish; its the word nurse that brings in the trolls -
regulars here simply killfile rubbish on sight; it soon keeps the stuff at
manageable levels.
