A website designed to give schoolchildren a better idea of what it is like
to be a nurse in the NHS has been re-launched.

The new Learn about Nursing http://www.learnaboutnursing.org/ website has
been developed by the Department of Health, in collaboration with the Royal
College of Nursing and Nursing Standard magazines Nursing the Future
campaign. It aims to raise awareness of present day nursing in the NHS, and
to get rid of outdated concepts of nursing that schoolchildren may have.

The website contains quizzes and activities for primary age children and
career and work experience information for secondary age children. There are
also lesson plans to suit all age group, which have been designed to fit
into National Curriculum Key Stages 1 to 5.

Chief nursing officer Sarah Mullally said:

This is a great website that shows children of all ages how nursing has
modernised since Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacoles day. I hope the
site will also encourage teachers and pupils to get to know their local
nurses better and so become more familiar with the variety of their roles in
modern day health care.
